“Criticising Government Is Not a Death Sentence in a Democracy” - Eribo Osaretin Condemns Attack on MC Porkupyne

Edo state: Eribo Osaretin has strongly condemned the reported attack on MC Porkupyne, insisting that criticising the government should never be treated as a crime punishable by death or met with violence, intimidation, or threats.

Osaretin described the incident as a matter of serious concern, stressing that in a democratic society, citizens must be free to express their opinions, question government policies, and hold public officeholders accountable without fear of being attacked for their views.

He recalled the alleged threats MC Porkupyne had previously received from individuals said to be associated with the Edo APC, warning him never to set foot in Edo State again. According to Osaretin, these reported threats make it imperative for the appropriate authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine whether there is any connection between the earlier threats and the incident.

Osaretin called on the Nigeria Police Force to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation into the attack, identify everyone involved, and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law. He stressed that the investigation should not be influenced by political affiliations, personal relationships, or the status of those who may be implicated.

“This is democracy, not a dictatorship. Criticising the government is not a death sentence, and nobody should be attacked, threatened, or intimidated for expressing a political opinion.” This is the position Osaretin emphasised in condemning the incident.

He noted that democracy thrives on freedom of expression, constructive criticism, accountability, and respect for opposing views. Government officials and political supporters may disagree with critics, challenge their arguments, or respond publicly to allegations, but violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic system.

Osaretin also cautioned political actors and their supporters against creating an atmosphere in which citizens feel unsafe for criticising those in power. He stressed that political loyalty should never become an excuse to threaten another person’s safety or deny them their fundamental rights.

He concluded by insisting that no political party, government, or individual is above the law and that the appropriate authorities must act decisively to ensure that those responsible for the attack are held accountable.
