June 12 Democracy Day: Orhionmwon Council Boss Calls for Sober Reflection and Protection of Sovereignty

As Nigeria marked the June 12 Democracy Day, the Chairman of Orhionmwon Local Government Council, Hon. Newman Ugiagbe, called for sober reflection and urged all democratic elements to jealousy protect the sovereignty of the nation. He lamented the negligence of the APC-led federal government in moving the vast majority of Nigerians out of poverty, resulting in the brain drain of the country's best minds fleeing to foreign lands in search of a better life.

Hon. Ugiagbe admonished the people of Edo State not to make the mistake of electing anti-democratic elements in the upcoming September 21st gubernatorial election, citing the untold hardships caused by the Tinubu-led APC federal government. He commended Governor Godwin Obaseki for setting the pace for people-friendly governance, expressing hope that with the right persons in leadership positions, Nigeria can still achieve greatness.

The State's ALGON Chairman emphasized the importance of democracy and the need for Nigerians to cherish and protect it. He urged leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people and work towards creating a better future for all.

"The June 12 Democracy Day is a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made to establish democracy in Nigeria," Hon. Ugiagbe said. "We must continue to cherish and protect our democracy, ensuring that it works for the benefit of all Nigerians."

He lamented the current state of affairs in the country, where poverty and hardship have become the norm. He said, "the APC-led federal government has failed to deliver on its promises, leaving many Nigerians in poverty and desperation. Our best brains are fleeing the country in search of better opportunities, and this brain drain is a major setback for our nation."

Hon. Ugiagbe commended Governor Obaseki's efforts in setting the pace for people-friendly governance in Edo State. "The Governor has shown that with the right leadership, democracy can work for the people. We must continue to support leaders who prioritize the welfare of the people and work towards creating a better future for all", said the National Organizing Secretary, ALGON

The Council Boss called on all Nigerians to reflect on the state of democracy in the country and work towards protecting and strengthening it. He urged leaders to prioritize the welfare of the people and strive for good governance, ensuring that Nigeria achieves its full potential.

In June 2018, former President Muhammadu Buhari announced June 12 as the new date for the celebration of Nigeria's democracy. The decision was to posthumously honour MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Before the new date, Democracy Day was celebrated annually on May 29.
